Were the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki necessary to end ww2?
An invasion ofJjapan was planned, but would likely have cost many more lives (both Allied and Japanese). The Japanese had an ages old concept of honor - surrendur was not an option for them - research the kamikaze pilots who killed themselves to inflict damage on their targets. A Japanese warrior would kill themselves(historically by disembowlment) rather then suffer dishonor. Their were old (in their 60's or 70's) Japanese soldiers still defending their islands who were found as late as 1990 who did not know that the war had ended! The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was neccesary - it convinced the Japanese that they would face total devastation and the death of their civilians. They were not afraid to lose their military personal. Destruction of their cities and the death of non-combatants was something else. President Truman made a very difficult decision which ultimately was the right one. May the people who died in the attacks RIP. There deaths ended the worst war in human history, and were unfortunately neccesary.
