Why do Christians not seem to tolerate atheists?

I'm a catholic but have many friends that are atheists and always tell me how they meet with christians etc that always try to convert them to their religion as long as there healthy, happy and causing no harm to anyone else shouldnt they be allowed to believe (or in this case not believe) in whatever they want without persecution? Why has religion become a numbers game?
